WSMT Goes to Southern National Motorsport Park in Kenly, NC for Race #2

The WSMT is off to a fast start to the 2013 season with its second race in as many weeks.

The NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour contingent will head to Southern National Motorsports Park in Kenly, N.C., for the KOMA Unwind Relaxation Drink 150 on Saturday, March 23. The First of 2 WSMT races in 2013.

Southern National has played host to three events in the NASCAR Whelen Southern Modified Tour history, from 2006-2008. It was closed from 2009 to 2011, before re-opening last year and becoming a NASCAR Whelen All-American Series track. Southern National is a 4/10 of a mile oval and has banking of 17 degrees in the turns and seven degrees on the straightaways.

The race will have a Northern flavor  as the 41 of Ryan Preece (CT)  in his family owned Mod, 79 Woody Pitkat (CT)  the New Smyrna Champion in the Hill Racing Modified, 58 Eric Goodale (L.I., NY) in his Riverhead Builders Modified and part time WSMT runner 59 Renee Dupuis (CT) in the Ed Bennett III machine.  Preece, Pitkat and Goodale are all regulars on the Northern WMT.

Maybe Ted Christopher will show for the race in the Brady 00 as he did for Caraway last week. From all accounts the TC and the Brady 00 seemed to be down on power at Caraway even with a 4th place finish.

02 Tim Brown had a great race and an awful race @ Caraway all rolled into one. Brown had a rocket ship and was well on his way to a win when it looked like Brown ran out of fuel while leading with 5 laps to go.

Brown said a “burp somewhere up in the vent line” likely erroneously indicated the tank was full when they were fueling before the race.

It was just a mistake,” Brown said. “I wasn’t mad, I was just heartbroken. That thing was hooked up.”

Brown set fast time and lead a race high of 96 laps out of the 150 total laps.

Brown has a win and two runner-up finishes in the three WSMT tour races held @ SNMP.

4 Jason Myers will be looking for his second straight WSMT win to start the season. After restarting second on the Green- White- Checker finish, Myers jumped to the top of the board on the restart. Though GB III started on the inside on the green-white-checkered, he spun the tires on the restart and couldn't rally to challenge Myers.

It took 153 laps to complete the event.

4 of the 20 starters came out of the event with motor problems 1 Burt Myers, 40 Luke Fleming, 80 Michael Speeney and 70 Jeremy Gerstner. Let’s hope they can all get the motors repaired in time for this weekend’s race.

The 64 of Danny Bohn was the first car out after being involved in an early race accident. Bohn was upside down at the Battle at the Beach @ Daytona. Not a very good start to the season for the runner-up in the point standings in 2012.

After missing out on Caraway I will be headed to SNMP for this week’s race (3-23-13) with my Co-Pilot the LongIslandmodmaniaic. I will have a Full Race Report and Photos.

Point Standings as of 3/19/2013.
