Thompson Speedway plus Whelen Modified Tour Equals a Fantastic Weekend of Racing

4/14/2013

WOW!!!

Do I need to say anything else? What a race.

The Whelen Modified Tour put on one hell of a show at Thompson International Speedway on Sunday.

If you have never been to Thompson put it on your to do list. You will not be disappointed.

It was a chilly day, but one hot afternoon for the first WMT race of 2013.

Thompson Speedway has everything. It’s big (5/8 of a mile) high banked and extremely fast. Pole Speed was 120.527 MPH set by 7-Time WMT Champion Mike Stefanik . Two wide and three wide racing all day long. Add to that some of the best wheelmen to drive any kind of race cars in the country and a huge crowd to boot. You have it all.

This Tour is loaded with talented Drivers, Crew Chiefs, Crew Members and the Best Dam Car Owners in the business today. There are 12 legitimate teams that can win on any day the Tour runs a race.

The 16 of Ryan Preece took the lead from the 22 of Mike Stefanik at the drop of the green flag and it was on. Preece lead until lap 8 when the 93 of Rowan Pennink took over from his 3rd starting spot.

Lap 10 - Top 5: 93 Pennink, 16  Preecce,  6 Silk, 64 Yuhas, 2 Szegedy.

Lap 15 -93 Pennink, 16 Preece, 6 Silk, 64 Yuhas, 2 Szegedy, 52 Coby, 22 Stefanik, 44 Santos, 3 Christopher, 51 Bonsignore.

CAUTION NO. 2: 26 McDonald goes around in Turn 4.

Lap 46 – 52 Coby, 22 Stefanik, 44 Santos and 4 Lia among the leaders to pit road. Stefanik does not change tires.

Red Flag for repairs to the wall.

Back to green and 16 Preece leads 76 Blewett and 89 Solomito. The young kid from Long Island 89 Timmy Solomito in his family car has charged up to 3rd place form his 20th starting spot.

Some great story lines in todays race.

Halfway: Lap 75 - Top 5: 16 Preece, 76 Blewett, 22 Stefanik, 89 Solomito,  3 Christopher.

Outstanding racing here today.

The 72 of Chuck Hossfeld has come all the way from 29th starting spot to run in 6th place. Hossfeld qualified 4th, but was DQed for illegal fuel and forced to start last. Niece bounceback for the 72 team.

Lap 100 - Top 5: 16 Preece, 22 Stefanik, 93 Pennink, 76 Blewett, 72 Hossfeld. Some teams are starting to fade and need to pit to put on tires.

Lap 115 -2 Szegedy gets second.

Lap 136 - CAUTION NO. 7: Accident in Turn 2 involving 44 Santos, 99 Tomaino, 88 Chew and 26 McDonald. 88 Chew will need the wrecker.

Lap 141 – 22 Stefanik takes the lead. The battle for 2nd heats up as the 93 of Pennink trys to hold off the 6 of Silk and the 16 of Preece.

Lap 146 - Very tight at the front between 22 Stefanik, 83 Pennink, 6 Silk and 16 Preece.

4 To Go. It’s anybody’s race.

Lap 150 – 22 Mike Stefanik wins the Icebreaker at Thompson. It’s Stefaniks 3rd Icebreaker win of his career.

This one should have been on TV. What a great race.

Stars of the race 22 Stefanik, 93 Pennink (lead the most laps), 16 Preece, 6 Silk, 76 Blewett, 72 Hossfeld, 89 Solomito. I know I left somebody out. Everybody was a star today.

NASCAR has something really special with the WMT.

Tough luck award to the 64 of Ron Yuhas Jr. The weekend started off with a lot of promise qualifying 6th and running up to 4th spot with their new crew chief Curt Chase and ended in the first turn wall on lap 62.

Hey Thompson Speedway management how about adding a couple of more WMT events to your schedule. It just doesn’t get any better than this.
