Waterford Speedbowl to Open the 2013 Northeast Racing Season

MRS to Headline the Budweiser Blastoff   Picture

A beautiful spring day in New England brought out a large contingent of racecars and on-lookers this past Saturday at Waterford Speedbowl. Over 125 racecars representing many divisions jammed the pit area to test and tune for the 2013 race season. The Speedbowl opens the New England racing season this coming weekend with Budweiser Blastoff, the track’s 63rd season opener.

A very large turnout on Saturday was made by the Valenti Modified Racing Series. The popular open-wheel series will begin its 10th anniversary season at the Speedbowl as part of Budweiser Blastoff Weekend.  25 teams attended the practice day to put down laps on the shoreline oval in anticipation of the 100 lap opener.

Two MRS Modifieds received damage on Saturday. The 9 of Tommy Barrett and the 57 of Keith Rocco. Both teams said they hope to have repairs made for the opener.

VMRS will open the Modified racing season in the Northeast at The Waterford Speedbowl April 5th, 6th, & 7th. The Blastoff weekend is highlighted by a 100-lap feature for the Valenti Modified Racing Series and a special 63-lap race for the NASCAR Whelen All-American Series SK Modifieds®. Thirteen divisions in total will each be after the first checkered flags of 2013 racing season.

Saturday April 2, 2013 - Events will include qualifying and seven features. The first feature event goes off at 5:00 pm.

Sunday April 7, 2013 - Six feature events including the Valenti Modified Racing Series 100, NEMA Midgets and NASCAR Whelen All-American Series 63-lap SK Modified® feature highlight Sunday’s action. The NASCAR Whelen All-American Series Late Model, Street Stock and Mini Stock features all hit the track on Sunday as well. The pit party begins at 9:30am.

Defending Champion and 3-Time title holder Jon McKennedy will not defend his crown in 2013 and run only a partial MRS schedule this year. McKennedy will concentrate on running the ISMA Supermodified schedule in 2013.

Art Berry of Preston, CT Champion car owner also will not defend his owners Championship and run a partial MRS schedule with McKennedy behind the wheel. The Barry machine will have a new number for 2013 and that will be 21 a change from number 2 it carried on the doors in the championship year of 2012.

5 Chris Pasteryak of Jewitt City, CT in his family owned Modified will be one of the favorites to win at Waterford and will be a heavy favorite win his third MRS Championship of his career. His other Championships came in 2008 & 2011. Pasteryak has 6 career wins on the MRS with 2 coming at the Speedbowl.

Two other teams that will contend for the MRS title will be the Gary Casella owned 25 with driven by Rowan Pennink of New Egypt. NJ. Pennink has 7 MRS career wins including 1 at Waterford.  The 25 was not at Waterford on the 30th, but opted to run the practice at Thompson on the same day. The 25 Modified looks to have lost a motor during that practice. While at Thompson Pennink was also able to shake down his family owned WMT #93 Modified.

Pennink will also run the full WMT in his family owned 93, so he has a very busy schedule for 2013.

The other contender for the MRS Series title will be the Chuck Montville owned 06 driven by Les Hinckley of Windsor Locks, CT. Hinckley has 17 career wins on the MRS second on the all-time win list. Hinckley is still looking for that first win at the Speedbowl and his first championship on the MRS.

This should be a great start to a great year here in New England.
