Cakewalk: Hirschman makes it Look Easy Winning the SBM 125 @ Star Speedway
Race Date June 15, 2013
59 Matt Hirschman of Northampton, PA went on to completely dominate a pretty stout field of Modifieds on Saturday night @ Star Speedway in Epping, NH.
It was Hirschman’s 2nd win in a row in the SBM 125. He also won the event in 2012.
This was almost the whole story:
Hirschman set fast time in time trials, so he started on the pole in the 1st heat race. Lead all 12 laps of the heat race from start to finish.
The top 8 qualifiers redrew for starting positions. Hirschman picked #2 for the outside pole.
The race was marred by 14 cautions for at least 100 laps of riding around under a yellow light. Caution laps did not count. Only green flag laps.
After lap 89 there wasn’t any continuity to the race. It was stop and go the rest of the way.
The race had 10 cautions from lap 89 to lap 125. They happened on laps 89, 91, 96, 98, 101, 101, 101, 107, 110, 114.
The 5ct of Chris Pasteryak of Lisbon, CT and 2 time MRS Modified Champion looked like he never drove a Modified before and was involved in at least 4 or 5 of the cautions. I guess this is why he doesn’t run on the WMT anymore. Can you say intimidation?
Hisrchman took the lead from pole sitter 79 Max Zachman, of Preston, CT on the green flag lap and was never headed or challenged despite the 14 yellow flags.
Hirschman won the show, but the 9 of Tommy Barrett was the show
One bright spot in the race was the 17 year old Tommy Barrett of Millis, MA. Barrett started 20th in the 25 car field.
After the caution on lap 18 Barrett started to make his move passing at will on the outside.
Lap 25 – Barrett was in 11th
Lap 40 – 10th
Lap 50 – 7th
Lap 63 – 5th
Lap 71 – 3rd
Lap 89 everyone pitted except the 24 of Todd Patnode of Richmond, NH who inherited the lead under the yellow.
Trying to pit at Star is a nightmare. There is no place to pit that many cars at once.
When we go green - 24, 59, 21, 40, 6, 13, 05, 99, 51, 9, 3, 15, 12, 79, 70, 20, 5, 66,, 57, 06, 92, 26.
Barrett came out in 10th place.
Back to the green and Hirschman to the front again.
Then all of the cautions started to take away from the race.
Lap 95 Barrett moved into 4th place
Lap 96 – 3rd
Lap 98 - 2nd
When we go green - 59, 9, 40, 13, 05, 06, 21, 3, 70, 79, 5, 92, 24, 57, 99, 20, 66, 51, 26
That’s when it ended for Barrett as he began to slide backwards.
Lap 107 Barrett pulled into the pits with engine problems and was done for the night.
That was about it for the race.
