Oswego Speedway Drops Green Flag on the Racing Community

By Jeremiah Fish

OSWEGO, NY – The Oswego Speedway opened the gates on the season this past weekend, but there was not one super modified in the pits. Not a racecar what so ever to be found anywhere. That distinct smell of methanol was only vivid in the minds, not the nostrils, of this days attendees. The work done on the track this particular Saturday was not being done by race car drivers in fire suits with names like, Ordway, Furlong, Hawksby , Didero, Shampine, Warren, or Hevron but instead by a bunch of regular Joe’s with names like “Roads”, “Pinner”, “Big Bird” and some of the coolest guys you will ever have the pleasure of hanging with, Patrick Evans & The fellow’s from Oswego Industries.

The first “event” of the year had no big payout to the winner, in fact the whole lot of them did it voluntarily, pro-bono, and would turn around and do it again next week if you asked them to. This race fans, was the third annual Oswego Speedway Spruce up day. Resplendent with the dingiest work clothes that they could all find in the back of their wardrobes the volunteers set out to get the “Old Gray Lady” into fighting shape for the 2006 racing season. Armed with shovels, rakes, scrapers, hoses, paint brushes, and elbow grease this Motley Crew went to work well before 8 a.m. and stayed until after 5 p.m. to get the speedway in order for the loyal minions that will flock to the fast 5/8 mile oval for its 55th year of racing entertainment.

Inside and out, the track got the much-needed attention that is due after a central New York winter has it’s way with any structure. The entrances to the speedway were all swept and cleaned of debris and sand. The ticket booths were all touched up and attended to. The stair ways leading to the main grandstand were given a fresh coat of  “OSHA” yellow paint, complete with safety grit, to ensure safe ascension for fans of all ages to their seats to watch the 800 horsepower super-modified stallions and their ace pilots do battle at blistering speeds in the closest of quarters, and in the process give no quarter. Inside the track the ominous metal wall was scraped and a fresh coat of vibrant white paint was applied. The racing surface was cleared of any clutter that Mother Nature’s forces may have carried in during those cold winter days. Even the tracks garbage cans were given a racy look, with a glistening coat of Corvette red paint.

This mother of all racetracks is ready. A place that has been visited by the luminaries of the motor sports business on countless occasions. In the air, when you are in the presence of this asphalt enigma, you can hear their names, Bellinger, Bodine, Ciprich, Gosek, Coniam, Hevron, Furlong, Benson, Ordway, Johncock, Warren, Dates, Troyer and many more. Some have gone before we were ready to throw a final checkered flag for them. Shampine, Michaels, and Pete Trenca. They are all there. Each of them are part of the foundation that built this splendid house of speed.  My question to you, race fans: Will you be there?
