SavannahÖÖSavannah.   The sound rolls off the tongue. Itís not a city, not a place to live. Itís a place to LIVE! Itís General Sherman burning his way across the south and sparing Savannah. Itís Forrest Gump and his box of chocolate. Savannah is smooth southern jazz, spanish moss and hot southern food. Look at a city map of Savannah and youíll see parks , lots of parks. While looking at the map follow highway 80 west of town a half dozen miles. Out where the swamp land just south of the Sava! nnah / Hilton Head airport is located. Thereís a little spot out there called Ogelthorpe  Speedway. Thatís what Iím talking about.

Racing is coming to SavannahÖagain. Because racing came once before more than 90 years ago. In 1908 the largest and most famous race in American was the Vanderbilt Cup, run annually near New York City. There were problems with crowd control, or extreme lack of it, and drivers unhappy with the place in general. A new home for this prestigious race was needed. Savannah made a bid and won. Savannah was now the center of racing in the United States. After hosting the Vanderbilt Cup for two years and running the U.S. Grand Prix three years,  this Georgia seaport also ran into trouble. The track was run on public roads which had been turned into a racing facility by convict ! labor. The militia was called out to patrol the track and control the spectators.  They did such a fine job that one driver, who didnít listed to their request to stop backing up in the pit area, had his tires and gas tank shot out!  But fighting within the sanctioning bodies was the last straw and besides other tracks were being built. Like that big new one up at Indianapolis. Racing left and didnít return until the late 1990ís when CART made a fumbling attempt to bring their series to this river front facility.

Now itís 2006 and the eyes of the racing world are again waiting for the results from Savannah. On February 3rd and 4th the Ogelthorpe Speedway will hold itís second Coke Cola Young Guns event. Drivers 23 or younger will compete in Crate Late Models and IMCA modified! s on the dirt half mile speedway. The first year had a dozen or so drivers in each class. This year there are nearly one hundred young guns going to compete. The young men and women will be coming from 25 states and Canada. Several NASCAR teams will send representatives to seek their new superstars.

LuvRacin.com will be there to interview and report the events. Youíll meet the people of Ogelthorpe Speedway. The Stone family, Ted Austed track manager, Darlene in the front office and Duane Goins assisting  in the announcers booth, plus many more of the people that make it happen here at Ogelthorpe Speedway.. You will hear names that youíve not heard before, but will be hearing for years to come. As we prepare to leave for the races at Savannah, much like they did on steam ships and special trains nearly one hundred years ago, we wi! ll take you with us for all the tacing excitement and food and music that was and is Savannah.
