Midwest Racing Roundup

Indianapolis,IN    By Tom Botos   8-2-09
Hello racefans it was a wild and weird night of racing at Mt. Lawn (IN) Speedway Saturday Night as the Founders Day 100 for Thundercars took place and it was won by Brian Hopkins of New Castle,Indiana. Kevin Claborn returned in his familiar red #17 thundercar to finish 2nd followed by the #20 of Tony Stewart from Straughn,Indiana. Two separate rain showers hit the speedway. One rainshower delayed the late model feature for a little while as Terry Cater returned to his winning ways and won his 1st late model feature for the 2009 racing season! This Saturday August 8th is a regular show of Late Models,Thundercars,Hornets, and Indy Faskarts.
I am starting a new feature here in my column each week. I will have a Fan Of The Week feature where I pick a fan that I see visibly at the races each weekend that shows a little more interest in racing than your occasional racefan that only goes to the races once a month. Each week I will take the fan's picture and attatch it to the racing questionaire that is filled out my my Fan Of The Week. I have been thinking about doing this for awhile and I realized I could use Microsoft Word to create a racing questionaire template to be used each week at the races.
My very first Midwest Racing Fan Of The Week is Daniel A. Ellis from Knightstown,Indiana. Daniel's hometracks are Mt. Lawn (IN) Speedway and Anderson (IN) Speedway. Daniel has visited Gas City (IN) Speedway,Winchester (IN) Speedway, and Salem (IN) Speedway. Daniel has traveled as far as Montpelier (IN) Speedway to see a race which is in the eastern part of Indiana. Daniel agrees with me that all tracks should allow at least a six pack size cooler to be brought into the racetrack. Daniel would like to see improved bleachers and restroom facilities at the racetracks. Daniel has been a racefan for twenty years. Daniel says he wouldm rather go to the races than any other activity on Saturday NIghts. Daniel says his favorite racing divisions are Late Models, CRA Sportsman, and FWD Hornets. Danile attends big races like the Raintree 100 and the Founders Day 100 as well as weekly regular shows. Daniel attends races with his Four year old Daughter Baylie Ellis. I will include there picture with this story but I am not sure MAARN News will print the pictures.

I felt it was high time the weekly racefan get some attention and acknowledgement and what better way can this happen than being a Fan Of The Week! Next week I might pick two fans and they would be my Fans Of The Week. We will see how it goes and where my mood takes me!
Coming this Saturday August 8th at Anderson (IN) Speedway is an awesome show of CRA Sportsman,CRA Street Stocks, and the Immediadent Figure 8 Division! This should be a barnburner of a program and I strongly urge you to attend. Mt. Lawn (N) Speedway has added another program on Sunday August 23rd with CRA Sportsman,CRA Street Stocks and CRA Compacts Division. The races on Sunday August 23rd will start at 5PM!
Kankakee County (IL) Speedway has reopened under the direction of Promoter Tom Smith who also Promotes at Plymouth (IN) Speedway. Tom Smith is a Late Model driver who has won races this season at Illiana (IN) Speedway near in Schererville,Indiana. I have seen Tom in action at PLymouth Speedway and he is a very hands on type of promoter always making sure the racing program is going smoothly. I am glad to see Kankakee under his guidance and there is no doubt in my mind with two shows already in the books since Kankakee reopened that Kankakee should prosper with Tom Smith at the helm!
Coming this Thursday August 6th is the Super Summer Sizzler for Super Late Models at New Paris (IN) Speedway. This gigantic race pays $20,000 to win and is one of the biggest races in Michiana for Super Lates! The Mini Stocks have been added to this years program for $2009 to win in there feature event!
Coming this Friday August 7th is the International Gold Cup 100 at Baer Field (IN) Speedway for the Super Pro Series Late Models. Also on this racing card will be the O'Reilly Tour Modifieds,Baer Field Late Models,Street Stocks, and Mini Stocks. This should be a whale of a show seeing two divisions of late model type cars!
Plymouth (IN) Speedway has the 2nd Leg of the Triple Crown Late Model Series Saturday August 8th along with Sportsman,Street Stocks,Mini Stocks nad the FWD Division. There is not a bad seat in the house at Plymouth and it is a very fan friendly facility. There is so much racing going on this coming weekend you will have to just pick and choose! It is not easy sometimes when you are a devoted fan of many different types of racing.
Salem (IN) Speedway has the Frank Kimmel All Star Challenge for Street Stocks along with the Lucas Oil Super Stocks Saturday August 8th. Many southern Indiana street stock stars are entered for this twin 30 lap feature format. Already entered in this race are drivers like Chuck Barnes,Tony Conway,Joe Williamson, and Eric Nale,Scott Caudill and Jeff Caudill.
Wherever you decide to take in a race this weekend please take some friends and family with you to the races! If you would like to be featured as my Midwest Fan Of The Week or you have any news, notes or comments email me at Gotta go see ya at the races!!!
