It was a huge weekend of racing this past weekend as I went to Gas City (IN) Speedway on Friday followed by Anderson (IN) Speedway on Saturday Night. It was a near capacity crowd both nites as many people decided to extend there nights on the town to celebrate our Labor Day weekend with family and friends. what better way to do this than taking in some good ole down home local short track racing!!!

Friday Night at Gas City (IN) Speedway was a pretty good night of racing despite a few more yellow flag caution peoriods than expected. James Headley won both the UMP Thundercar Feature and the UMP Street Stock Feature. It is the first time I have seen James Headley race but I see his name in track racing results alot.Ervin Turner passed Headley in the UMP Street Stock Feature but could not keep the lead as James Headley regained the lead and took the feature.Congrats to James on both his wins! Gas City has treated me very well both nights that I have been there for races. Tommy Beezley won the UMP rainout Modified Feature.Doug St. Myers won the regular UMP Modified Feature.Tommy Beezley usually races on pavement at tracks like Angola (IN) Speedway and Baer Field (IN) Speedway. If you visit Gas City you cannot take coolers into the speedway. again Gas City (IN) I-69 Speedway reminds me of Kankakee County Speedway because you sit so close  to the action.

Saturday Night me and a friend went to Anderson (IN) Speedway to watch the IOFS International   Outlaw Figure 8 Series and the Night Of Thrills Train Figure 8 Race and School Bus Figure 8 event. Eddie Van Meter won his third IOFS Outlaw Figure 8 Feature. Charlie Hargraves and Doug Greig tried high and low but could not beat Eddie Van Meter.

My Midwest Racing Fan Of The Week from the races at Gas City (IN) Speedway is Randy HInes from Peru,Indiana. Randy is 55 years old and he sat one row below me in the grandstands at Gas City (IN) Speedway. Randy said his favorite drivers are Cole Whitt in Sprints and his son Ryan Hines in street stocks. Randy likes to go to Eldora (OH) Speedway as much as possible since it is his favorite racetrack. Randy has traveled as far as Butler (MI) Speedway to watch races. Randy has been  a fan of racing for 40 years and he wants to see more tracks allow fans to bring in coolers. I think more fans would come to the races and would spend more money on souvenirs and other racing merchandise if they did not have to spend an arm  and a leg on concession stand food and drinks. Randy likes to watch Late Models,Sportsman,Modifieds,Street Stocks and Sprints. Randy has been to the World 100 at Eldora (OH) Speedway and the Dream 100 at Eldora. Randy has been at the legendary Pennsboro (WV) Speedway for the DIrt Track World Championship for Dirt Late Models. Randy has been to dirt tracks all over Indiana and would like to see more tracks have scoreboards and programs with driver point standings and driver rosters for visiting fans from other tracks in the midwest. Randy subscribes to Stock Car Magazine and Dirt Tracking Magazine.

I have several Midwest Fans OF The Week for this column. Since I went to 4 racing events I decided to have a Fan Of The Week from each racetrack. Saturday Night at Anderson (IN) Speedway I met Mike Heimel a devoted racefan and auctioneer in the Indianapolis,IN area. Mike is 56 years old and sponsors Jack Dossey Jr. a Six Time World Figure 8 Champion at the Indianapolis (IN) Speedrome. Mike said his favorite drivers are Jack Dossey Jr. and Jack Dossey III from the Indy Speedrome and Thomas Skiles in Jr. Faskarts. Jack Dossey III competes in a Bandolero car at the Indy Speedrome. MIke Sponsors both Dosseys including Thomas Skiles.  and enjoys watching many types of racing. MIke said his favorite tracks are Anderson (IN) Speedway,Bloomington (IN) Speedway ,and Tri State (IN) Speedway in Haubstadt,Indiana. Mike likes to watch the IOFS International Outlaw Figure 8 Series and sprint cars all across the midwest. Mike has seen figure 8 races at Charlestown (IN) Speedway and  Sportsdrome Speedway in Jeffersonville,Indiana. Mike has travled as far as Las Vegas to take in an auto race!  Mike is a member of the Hoosier Auto Racing Fan Club here in Indiana. If you are in the Indianapolis area you can catch his auction on Thursday nights in Beech Grove,Indiana which is a suburb now of Indianapolis. To find out more about Mike Heimel Auctions go to www.heimelauctions.com. Mike definitely  qualifies to be Midwest Racefan Of The Week sponsoring young up and coming drivers and supporting racing through the HARF racing fan club.

Sunday and Monday I went to Winchester (IN) Speedway for the World Stock Car Festival and I met Robert Stigall age 39 from Muncie,Indiana.Robert was also at Anderson (IN) Speedway Saturday Night for there Night Of Thrills Races and the IOFS Figure 8 Events. Robert's favorite tracks are Mt. Lawn,Winchester, and Anderson (IN) Speedways. Robert said hsi favorite touring series is the O'Reilly USA Modified Series in action this past weekend at Winchester (IN) Speedway. Robert's favorite driver is Jeff Lane in CRA Super Series Late Models from Knightstown,Indiana. Robert says he likes watching Late Models and Modifieds the most being a racefan his entire life. Robert attends the LIttle 500 Sprint Car Race at Anderson (IN) Speedway in May each year. Robert prefers asphalt track racing over dirt tracks overall. This is the 1st time  I have seen a fan of the week at two events which is awesome!

The racing at Winchester on Monday was off the hook and exciting. I like seeing all the different racing t shirts from different tracks that fans have on which shows how far they travel to catch a race. Fans can be very informative and are just as passionate about this great sport as much as drivers and crews. I have dreamed all my life of owning a motorhome and camping out at tracks like Eldora and Winchester where fans and drivers party all night and chat about racing. I feel we all become fans of what we grow up watching. I grew up watching figure 8 races every Friday and Saturday Night at the Indy Speedrome with some trips to Anderson (IN) Speedway in the car with my aunt and uncle. I fell in love with Anderson Speedway with those awesome high banks and later seeing tracks like Winchester and Salem (IN) Speedways. I would like to see Late Models or Sportsman run each week at Anderson again someday.

I have often thought where would I like to live. Which State or region in the USA has the best racing. Who has the best "hotbed" of racing. Me being a fan of both dirt and asphalt racing you get a good mix of Late Model and Street Stock racing here with the CRA Racing Series. I think my Indianapolis area is kind of unique having Outlaw Late Models on the Figure 8 with the IOFS Series. It is rough picking and choosing sometimes and I am sure you fans pick and choose which track to spend your entertainment dollar. You want to go where you get your moneys worth and not spend an arm and a leg in fuel for your car. I hope everyone enjoys the big races coming up this weekend! Any News, notes,or comments email me at indybear37@yahoo.com Gotta go see ya at the races!!!!
