Midwest Racing Roundup  4-12-10    By Tom Botos

Hello racefans it was an AWESOME racing weekend! This past weekend will be lingering in my psyche for awhile at least until I get to New Paris (IN) Speedway on Saturday Night April 24th! I started out Friday at the Season Opener at Gas City (IN) Speedway. 39 sprints invaded the speedway with Robert Ballou taking the opening night feature win. It was a wild and crazy night with a few sprints and 3 UMP modifieds flipping! I enjoyed watching Todd Sherman win the UMP Modified Feature as he won a ton of features last year at Montpelier (IN) Speedway. Todd's new paint scheme is totally awesome and it is a very fast looking mod! I dropped my car keys out of my coat pocket at Gas City, luckily I heard them hit the bleachers first so I borrowed a flashlight from the track office and found them. I am so glad noone dropped a Coke on me while under the grandstands. Everyone at Gas City treats me very nice and cordially it is fast becoming another track that is "home away from home for me". Gas City I-69 Speedway is hosting the USAC National Midgets Series this Friday Night April 16th along with USAC Sprints and UMP Modifieds!

I have tried to get more tracks to email me there racing results and press releases to me each week. I know to some people these things are not a very big deal but in my opinion if track owners and promoters send me press releases and results that is FREE advertising of there track and racing events! Providing this valuable information on as many websites and social networks like myspace and facebook promotes there track and drivers when you think about it in a roundabout way! Scott Wolfe does an outstanding job helping publicise racing events at KC (OH) Speedway and Skyline (OH) Speedways. Jerry Wahl also does a fabulous job with his racing column covering tracks like Kilkare (OH) Speedway and Columbus Motor Speedway. Earl Isaacs covers Shady Bowl (OH) Speedway very well too.

The point is that I am trying to help cover an promote all midwest area tracks any way and the best way that I can! If you are a track promoter, owner,or public relations/media official please email me your press releases and results each week at indybear37@yahoo.com. I have also found Facebook to be a VERY useful tool to communicate with tracks, fans, drivers, anyone in the racing world for that matter! If you dont have a free Facebook account I highly advise it if you want to read driver comments and chitchat after the races on weekends.

Saturday Night I went to Anderson (IN) Speedway for the IOFS International Outlaw Figure 8 Series event and it was a good race with lots of fast side by side criss-cross crossover action. Jeff Shackelford won the IOFS 50 lap feature  holding off all contenders as it seemed most the cars tires were worn out in the closing stages of the 50 lap slugfest! Rich Fenwick is in the #23 car driven by Eddie Van Meter last season. Rich Fenwick was caught in a wreck with #74 Charlie Hargraves and the #00 outlaw stock car which ended both Fenwick's and Hargraves evening. # 85 Richard Dickens in his new outlaw figure 8 chassis took 4th place and I am sure took home a nice chunk of change as he is very patient and lets race attrition award him with many great finishes in this great series! Congratulations both Jeff Shackelford on his win and Richard Dickens for making my Saturday night memorable!

Isaiah Starks my "little brother in the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program had a blast with me at Anderson Speedway Saturday Night! This past Saturday will live long in my brain with memories of Isaiah sitting in Rob Allman's #7 Street Stock,Bruce McFall's #93 Figure 8 Car,and Andy Sherley's # 09 Outlaw Figure 8 car. These great drivers just helped create the next generation or should I say new generation of racefans by allowing kids to sit in and get near there cars! To me this is very important if this great spectator sport is gonna survive into the next millenium. I want all our tracks to be around even when I am dead and gone for all kids to enjoy.  Short track auto racing is the best spectator sport in existance as far as im concerned despite what goes in with Nascar,IRL and Indycar!

Isaiah Starks is planning on joining me this Saturday Night at Anderson (IN) Speedway for the CRA Super Series 125 for CRA Super Series Late Models. I gave Isaiah 5 of my old programs from 2009 so he could learn the difference between late models, sportsman, street stocks, and thundercars. The Figure 8 division and the FWD cars will also be in action this Saturday Night at Anderson!

Sunday Afternoon me and my dad Tom Botos Sr. went to Salem (IN) Speedway for the ARCA 200 and the Frank Kimmel Street Stock 50. Thirty two street stocks started the Frank Kimmel Street Stock 50 as # 19 Todd Kempf won the race holding off a hard charging Chuck Barnes who probably ran out of laps to get by Todd Kempf. Congrats to Todd and Chuck on there finishes! Salem (IN) Speedway was packed to almost standing room only! Fans are excited and chomping at the bit to see figure 8s on the new track as #85 Richard Dickens was at Salem with his outlaw figure 8 car. Richard helped some friends with a car there at Salem that afternoon. Richard's car in the parking lot drew a small crowd after the races with fans and drivers asking questions about outlaw figure 8 racing. Salem has tentative open practice on the new figure 8 and 5/16 mile oval scheduled for May 10th.

Steve Arpin from Canada won the ARCA 200 Sunday at Salem (IN) Speedway. It was a hard fought race with many cars torn to pieces and a few cars were taped up ironclad gladiators after a few skirmishes and scrapes with the unforgiving Salem Speedway wall and other competitors! This ARCA 200 was one of the best ARCA races I have have witnessed. Very few fans left or headed toward the exits as the crowd was standing to see Steve Arpin take his 1st ARCA checkered flag at Salem and the huge trophy!

Racefans do not hesitate to send me race results from your track each weekend!
