Midwest Racing Roundup   By Tom Botos   5-24-10
Hi Racefans it ended up being an awesome weekend of racing despite Bloomington and Gas City Speedways both raining out Friday Night. I met my friend and racing pal Craig from the Knoxville ,TN  area Saturday Night at Paragon (IN) Speedway. Craig wanted to see  some sprint car racing and being that he lives in TN. they have very few if any sprints there.Craig was already staying in Bloomington so that meant Paragon Speedway was the closest sprint track. We both had a great time and I want to thank Judy Ford for allowing me in at such short notice as I have only been to Paragon Speedway twice in my lifetime. They had two sprint car features and both came down to the last lap as to whom was going to win! The racing was great in all classes with plenty of excitement for the very good crowd on hand. Paragon Speedway offers four classes weekly including Sprints,Super Stocks,Bombers and Pure Stocks. This coming Saturday Night May 29th the ILMS Crate Late Models make it a 5 in 1 show at the Paragon Speedway which is a dynamite show for both sprint fans and late model fans. Coolers are allowed in as well so make you some hot dogs wrap them in aluminum foil and stock up your cooler and head out to Paragon Speedway for a good show of auto racing!
Sunday afternoon me and my little brother Isaiah went to Winchester Speedway for his first ever visit to Winchester! Both Isaiah and I had a fabulous time watching Steve Christman win the CRA Street Stock feature and Dave Steele win the Must See king Of The Wings Feature. We headed into the pit area after the races where we both met drivers Cary Abrell,Bret Miles Jr.,Todd Marsh,Tyler Marsh, and Justin Brown. Isaiah was allowed to sit in a few sprint cars and also in Rich Boyer's #33 CRA Street Stock. Tyler Marsh a rookie this season in CRA street stocks gave Isaiah a Marsh racing #31 t-shirt thanks!!! Tyler for your generosity!
Isaiah is really living my childhood dream sitting in the racecars and also standing in front of them for pictures as I take them. It has been very rewarding for me to see him as a young racefan enjoy the sport as much as I do if not more. Isaiah is a real pleasure to be around and is in fourth grade and he gets out of school after Tuesday for summer vacation. I have no regrets being in the Bg Brother Big Sisters Program here in Indiana and I encourage you to go for it and join up if you enjoy kids and making a difference in someones life. All the fame, fortune or money in the world could not replace the fun I have had with Isaiah at the races this season!
I am going to try to make it to Anderson Speedway Wednesday Night May 26th as it is free admission for fans up until 5pm that night featuring Midgets and the Must See Racing Series Wing Sprints in action in a sixty lap feature! Friday Night at Anderson Speedway fans getin for $2.00 and will see Thundercars and FWD Oval and Figure 8 Cars on the high banks!
Anderson Speedway has the Legendary Little 500 for Sprints this Saturday May 29th. All tickets are reserved seats for $27.00. This should be an awesome race if you can make it!
Mt. Lawn Speedway hosts the May 5-0 races which are fifty lap features in all three divisions including Late Models,Thundercars, and Hornets on Saturday May 29th.
Plymouth Speedway hosts the Jim Blount Memorial Race for the Great Lakes Late Model Series on Sunday May 30th along with Sportsman and FWD's.
Kokomo Speedway hosts Sprints,Modifieds,Thundercars and Street Stocks Sunday May 30th. I have only been to Kokomo Speedway once and it was for an Americas Figure 8 Challenge race in the early 90's. I really need to check out this track as they seem to have great racing with excellent car counts from what I hear.
The National Auto Racing Memorabilia Show is at the Indiana State Fairgrounds on Friday May 28th from 2pm until 8pm and on Saturday May 29th from 9:30 am until 5 pm. This is the best memorabilia show around that I know of here in Indiana. Stop by the "NARM" show on your way to the Hoosier Hundred Friday May 28th also at the Indiana State Fairgrounds! The Hoosier Hundred is a great race for the USAC Silver Crown Cars. You should see this historic race at least once!
Saturday morning  May 29th at the Clarion Waterfront Hotel is the National Association Of Auto Racing Clubs Breakfast and Convention which costs $16.00 per person and is rumored to have Tom Sneva,Al Unser Sr.  and veteran Indianapolis 500 announcer hall of famer Tom Carnegie in attendance! Do not quote me on this as it is just rumor but I am going to check out this convention and breakfast since I have never been besides it is al, about racing!!! You can buy your ticket at the door but please call (317) 487-8096  for advance tickets or more information.
Wherever you decide to go racing this weekend be safe and have a wonderful Memorial Day weekend! To send me news, notes or comments email me at . Gotta go see ya at the races!!!
