Midwest Racing Roundup by Tom Botos
9-30-10
Hello Race fans I have been very bsuy with
work so I have finally made time to write this
article before my bed time. A few weekends ago I
went to Oreilly Raceway park here in Indianapolis,IN
for the CRA Welch & Wilson Rock N Race 100.
Congratulations goes out to Ross Kenseth for winning
the 100 lap Super Series event. As I was watching
the races I kept seeing a guy walking past me in and
out of the grandstands. I noticed he had an M-40
Speedway Big Gun Shootout T-shirt on. I went to this
race awhile back as it was my very first ever
Michigan track ever visited. The racing was totally
awesome that evening. I was surprised to see the
same T-shirt I had on again that night. I followed
the guy back to the concession stand to meet him.
Little did I know that it was none other than Larry
Giese from Cleveland,Ohio. It was very nice meeting
Larry and chatting about racing for a few minutes.
Larry writes the "Around The Asphalt" column
featured on
www.mwracingnews.com .
This past weekend I went to the Sportsdrome
(IN) Speedway in Jeffersonville,Indiana for the very
first time this racing season and witnessed some
great racing and decent car counts. Sportsdrome
Speedway still puts out one of the best and
informative racing programs in the midwestern area.
I make sure and buy one each time I go to that
track. Jesse Tunny won the World Figure 8 Tour event
which saw 14 cars wage battle which also brought
Outlaw Figure 8 Style cars back to the famous "drome"
speedway. Jerry isgrigg won the 75 lap Midwestern
Figure 8 Event which also displayed a very bad
crossover wreck involving the #10 car of Brian Wolfe
and the #44 of Jerry ilari. Fortunately neither
driver was hurt. Chris Workman won another Dromer
Figure 8 Feature as well on this might. if you ever
get a free weekend do yourself a favor and catch
some great figure 8 racing southern style at the "drome".
Mt. Lawn (IN) Speedway is now closed until
the 2011 racing season. I really hope that over the
winter any disagreements over tire rules and car
body rules are worked out so that some of the
drivers that raced only part time at Mt. Lawn will
make there return to the famous egg shaped speedway.
I have seen some of the very best racing in the
midwest at Mt. Lawn Speedway despite the tracks
weird configuration! My opinion is that if you can
master the famous short turn at "The Lawn" then you
can drive or race at any short track in america and
be competitive.
The CRA Champion Racing Association presents
The All American 400 this coming weekend at the
famous Nashville Fairgrounds Speedway. This could be
one of the very last events ever at this famous ASA
short track as they have dodged a few bullets to
stay open but I fear it may all come to an end very
soon for this facility. I have never been to the
track and I would not mind seeing a race there. If
you are in the Nashville,TN area this weekend go
check out this track as it may be your last chance
to do so!
Vermilion County Speedway in Danville,IL is
running this weekend as well. This event is a "save
the speedway" event trying to build up fan interest
as far as keeping it a race track. If you type in
Vermiion County Fairgrounds on Facebook you will
find all the event details as well. I do know that
they are running 410 Non Wing Sprints,Modifieds and
Pure Stocks along with mini sprints on Saturday
October 2nd. I hope this event is very successful. I
have seen some great Late Model and Modified racing
at V.C.S. and I would really hate to lose it as a
race track. The fair board is ready to blade this
track over if not proven successful. Good Luck this
weekend V.C.S. !
Gas City (IN) Speedway is hosting there door
closer event Friday October 1st. featuring Non Wing
Sprints,Modifieds,Street Stocks and Thunder Cars. I
have all but exhausted my vacation days from work to
go to Friday Night races this season. I would like
to get to Gas City Speedway more often but getting
off work at 3:45 PM puts me in rush hour traffic
trying to go there or even Bloomington Speedway for
that matter. Bloomington Speedway is now closed for
the remainder of the 2010 racing season.
This Friday October 1st. Sportsdrome
Speedway hosts the Chuck Winders Memorial 100 for
Extreme Oval division type cars. Chuck Winders was a
famous oval racing track champion at louisville
Motor Speedway and won features at the Sportsdrome
Speedway as well. There will also be qualifying heat
races for the Extreme Figure 8 cars competing in the
Figure 8 World 300 race on Saturday Oct 2nd. at the
Sportsdrome Speedway. For more information on ths
two day event go to
www.sportsdromeonline.com .
the IOFS International Outlaw Figure 8
series will crown there champion at their final
points race of the 2010 racing season Saturday Oct.
2nd at Anderson Speedway. The Outlaw Figure 8 cars
will wage war for 50 laps off the high banks of
Anderson with a very healthy entry list so far of
some of the best figure 8 drivers in the midwest.
The Culvers trailer fugure 8 race and the school bus
figure 8 events are also scheduled on this "Night Of
Thrills" program. Famous figure 8 drivers Bob
Fields,Joe Beaver,Johnny Keller and Gene Huston will
sign autographs for fans at the meet and greet prior
to the racing events at the Famous Anderson
Speedway!
Twin Cities (IN) Raceway Park hosts there
final event for 2010 featuring Super Stocks,Pure
Stocks and Bombers at the 3/8 mile dirt track. I
have not been to this track this season but if you
go pack you a cooler because they do allow them.
Lawrenceburg (IN) Speedway hosts the
Lawrenceburg Fall Nationals,MSCS $10,000 to win
Sprints, Budweiser UMP Modifieds, AMSA Mini Sprints
also on Saturday Oct. 2nd. Wherever you decide to go
racing this weekend take as many friends with you as
possible. These tracks need as many butts in the
stands as possible to stay afloat. If you have any
news, notes or comments please email me at
indybear37@yahoo.com Gotta go I hope to see you
at the races!!!
