Midwest Racing Roundup by Tom Botos 9-13-08
Hello Racefans as I sit here I am trying to decide where to go to a race tonight! I wonder if dirt drivers have as many choices as fans do and can pick and choose where to go.I assume if you have a UMP dirt car you can really pick and choose between a number of tracks to go to and know you will get UMP points. It is amazing to me how Bob Memmer organized and unified so many dirt tracks with his UMP rules.I wonder how he did it and if he traveled to each track and wonder how many hours he spent talking to track owners and promoters.
I would love to see someone with this kind of vision and organizing ability to contact all the asphalt tracks in the midwest there owners and promoters and unify the car rules similar to UMP dirt tracks.I believe this would improve the asphalt tracks popularity with fans and give drivers more choices of where to race and maybe this would entice national sponsors to get involved with auto racing even more.If asphalt tracks had national rules and points they could have season championship races in each state at a designated track with regional points awarded to all drivers. I am always looking for ways to promote local short track racing but maybe I am dreaming too big for asphalt tracks?
