Midwest Racing Roundup by Tom Botos Indianapolis,IN  8-16-08

Hello Racefans, I can feel that the racing season is almost over but this time of year also brings Season Champoinship Races and usually that means added laps to the features and higher payoffs for drivers. I have some good news, two dirt tracks have reopened one being Brown County (OH) Speedway and the other one is Willard (KY)  Speedway. Brown County Speedway has been a Saturday night dirt late model track for years it is located in Russellville Ohio.I have not been to this track yet so it remains on my "wishlist".

Willard (KY) Speedway suffered major facility damage by looters and vandals, as a result there scoring tower was burnt down. This is all in past as there scoring tower was rebuilt and now i hear there reopening this weekend with Late Model driver Randy Boggs helping out to promote the track. If anyone has any information on this track and website please email me at indybear37@yahoo.com.

It would be nice  if someone could take some pictures of the track and send them to MAARN News?

Hilltop Speedway in Marietta Ohio Has closed for the season unfortunately. They had to cancel  some races too due to the bad economy. This is a no-win situation for fans, crews, and drivers in that area. I hope the track can reopen in 2009  we will have to wait and see.

I wanted to compliment Jerry Wahl who writes the "Dayton Chatter"column and also the "Off The Wahl" column on Kilkare Speedways website.Jerry reading your column week after week in the MAARN along with other columns inspired me to write this column. I enjoy writing this column shedding light on both asphalt and and dirt tracks in the midwest region. It is with great joy that I write this column and i hope to promote racing here in the midwest in a positive way. I encourage anyone that desires to write a column to email MAARN and hopefully it will be as fulfilling for you as it has been for me!

A lightbulb went off in my head the other day about having a Midwest Racing Convention in November or January. This convention could be similar to the Performance Racing Industry show which is not open to the average racefan. This convention would be open to the public and would cover all aspects of weekly short track racing both dirt and asphalt tracks, crews, and drivers could be there signing autographs and selling t-shirts and souvenirs. Promoters could be there  having seminars and meetings to unify rules and also brainstorming to better promote racing in 2009.Think about it  racefans there are convetions for everything else, why not have one that will gather all of us on one united front to help promote weekly short track racing? Maybe if this was held in November a track owner would donate there track and facility to have this convention annually  each year? If anyone has any ideas on who I would talk too about organizing this  to please  email me.

Coming Sunday August 31 is the Big Dawg 100  for Modifieds paying 5,000 to win at Union County (IN) Speedway. The Super Late Models are battling for 2,000 to win that evening.
