2006 World Figure 8 Championship– Photos and Results
The Blossom Chevrolet Indianapolis Speedrome hosted the 30th annual World Figure 8 Championship earlier this month. And it was a dandy! The chase for $30,000 to the winner no doubt contributed to the number of entries and the intense competition. This three-hour speed and endurance event is unique in racing and has to be among the most exciting to watch.
The championship race concluded three days of practice, qualifying races and time trials for starting positions. Drivers came from several states including California, Washington, Florida and Michigan. The largest out-of-town contingent was Jeffersonville Sportsdrome Figure 8 racers—most from Southern Indiana and Kentucky.
Curtis McMurtrey was crowned the winner after completing 445 laps in the three-hour race. Bill Tunny, Jr. finished second with 442 laps. Third place went to Mark Harmon, last year’s Rookie of the Year, with 440 laps.
