Lucas Oil Late Model Touring Series at Bluegrass Speedway: It Gets Better and Better!
What a night! One of the best races I’ve seen! Even series announcer James Essex sounded breathless at times during the sixty-lap race on the half-mile dirt oval before a huge crowd. Fans were glued to the racing action from start to finish.
This was no ordinary Saturday night race. The Lucas Oil series, one of the best in the country, runs a schedule from February to October at tracks in roughly the eastern half of the United States. The series attracts full-time professional racers plus the best drivers from regions where they race.
The August 26th race at Bluegrass Speedway in Bardstown, Kentucky saw 48 drivers from 11 states competing for 24 starting positions in the feature race. Feature race qualifiers came from four heat races and two “B” Mains, plus series provisionals. Three track provisionals brought the starting field to 27 cars.
Racing was excellent from start to finish. The outstanding quality of the field was evident throughout the race. By my rough count, race leaders alone were three-wide for at least 30 laps of the sixty-lap race. Those drivers included Shannon Babb, Scott Bloomquist, Earl Pearson, Jr., Jimmy Mars, Don O’Neal and Darren Miller. And I probably missed some. The skill of these drivers is amazing!
The top five finishers were Scott Bloomquist, Darren Miller, Shannon Babb, Ray Cook and Jimmy Owens.
