OWENSBORO’S BEAU MITCHELL WINS HALLOWEEN 200 AT SALEM SPEEDWAY
Beau Mitchell is on a roll! Six straight wins in tough races are hard to get. That’s what Beau achieved by winning the October 29 “JayC Food Stores Halloween 200, Presented By Jasper Engines & Transmissions.” The win followed five in a row at Winchester Speedway.
The Halloween 200 is difficult to win. It is surely one of the toughest, most challenging, yet most entertaining races you can find anywhere. Ninety-two cars started on the half-mile high-banked asphalt track with each driver determined to finish 200 laps before the other 91 drivers. Entries came from Kentucky, Indiana, Michigan, Iowa, Ohio and Colorado. And they were not novice drivers. Many are seasoned veterans with a habit of crossing the finish line first in their races.
The Halloween 200 race was competitive from start to finish and several drivers had a shot at the top spot. While many tried, none could overtake Mitchell in the final laps. Nine drivers finished on the lead lap. Four-time winner and Salem 2006 Super Stock season champion Chuck Barnes, Sr. of Louisville pushed Mitchell hard in the final laps to take second place. Brian Hopkins of New Castle, Indiana finished third and Salem’s 2006 Street Stock season winner David Bayens of Memphis, IN trailed in the fourth spot. Louisville’s Doug Miller rounded out the top five.
Other drivers in the top ten were: 6-2004 winner Rich Boyer (Anderson, IN), 7-Tom Gossar (Markleville, IN), 8-Craig Cookingham (Flushing, MI), 9-2003 winner Johnny Magee (Carthage, IN) and 10-Calvin Parham (Lewisville, IN). Philpot, KY racers Mike Royal and Derrick Bartlett took the 11 and 12 spots. Louisville’s Tony Conway finished one lap behind the leader in the 13th spot.
