R. J. Merchant lives in South Sioux, NE. His home track is Interstate Speedway but he can also be found racing at Black Bend  Motorsports Speedway.

He began racing in 2001 at Interstate Speedway in Road Runner Class because it had been a dream of his since he was a little kid. His first win was in 2001 same Class and Track. Career highlights include 1 win in 2001 Road Runner and in 2002 won the Points Championship and two wins on the year.

The thrills of racing for R. J. are the fans. It's a great feeling to have someone cheering for you. His most exciting racing moment was in 2002, he started dead last (21st) and finished second in 12 laps. He is most proud of the night he got a flat tire with two laps to go, caution came out and he restarted 15th in two laps and went from 15th to 5th. He was happy with that turnout.

His racing hero is his Dad. He has taught R. J. a lot.
