#G3
Ronnie Vernon, 30,
currently drives the 2002 Dirt Works #G3 IMCA Open Wheel. He currently
resides in Friendship, TN with his wife Penny of 8 years and their 4
month-old son Payton. His parents are Mr. & Mrs. Billy Vernon. He also has
one brother named Jeffery Vernon and a sister named Jennifer Brown. He is
currently a cotton farmer.
Ronnie’s sponsors
are Agro Distributors in Friendship, Hastings Realty in Dyersburg, Eaton
Grain in Friendship, Watson Roofing and Crane Service in Friendship, Buck
Nash Construction in Friendship, Farmers Friendship Gin, and Griffin
Graphics in Dyersburg.
Ronnie got started
in racing because of his cousin Danny Gwinn. Danny bought a mini stock
years ago. He drove it in a few races but decided it wasn’t for him, so he
let Ronnie try it. Ronnie has been racing ever since for a total of 9
years.
The number 3 on his
car represents Dale Earnhardt, and the “G” is for Danny Gwinn who is the
car owner. Ronnie sees himself racing a late model someday. He states he
would really like to drive one, however for now, he will stay in the Open
Wheel until that opportunity comes along.
Ronnie’s biggest
influence in racing is his dad, Billy Vernon. His father use to race in
the 1950’s. He credits Danny Gwinn with keeping him motivated and giving
him the opportunity to drive his car. Ronnie says “If it wasn’t for Danny,
I wouldn’t be able to race.” Danny sets up the car and pays all the bills.
The biggest career
highlight for Ronnie was when he placed 14th in this region’s
IMCA National Points in 1996. He also won 2 track championships at
Dyersburg Speedway.
His scariest moment
was at Dyersburg Speedway in 1995 when he totaled out his first Open Wheel
car. He was involved in a collision and was hit 6 or 7 times in the door.
Ronnie’s favorite
driver on dirt is Billy Moyer of the late models. His favorite driver on
asphalt was the late Dale Earnhardt, but now, he likes Dale Earnhardt, Jr.
Ronnie would like to
thank Chad Nash and Jim Ervin. They help work on his car and never ask for
anything in return. He would also like to send a special thanks to his Dad
and Danny Gwinn for their support.
