TAMPA, FL…..2/18/05…..”I finished the B-Main on seven cylinders and replaced a rocker arm before the A-Main, but the problem came back again near the end of the race,” said Brad Waits who started the feature event in 22nd spot and surprised most of the top guns in the field as he methodically went by them on his way to victory lane in night four of the 6th Annual Ramada Inn on Tampa Bay Open Wheel Modified Winternationals at East Bay Raceway Park Friday night.

On top of the fact that he was down on power, the Zumbrota, Minnesota driver also confessed that the Skyrocket chassis he drove tonight was purchased used. Kelly Shryock, owner of the chassis company said, “Brad saw our cars running at home and thought he’d like to try one, so he bought a used one from me that had six races on it. I have to say he’s such a nice guy, but surely would be considered an underdog here at East Bay against this big turn out of top runners. We are all so happy for him.”

Waits, who has never been to Florida before, was pleased that his wife Sharon flew in for this series because, “ I haven’t won a Modified race for at least three years and I’m glad she was here for it.” He also wanted to credit his helpers and sponsors Jim and Burt Foote. It turns out that they won tickets to Daytona and decided to fly down early and help wrench Waits’ car.

Other sponsors include Jack at East Wood Motors, Bud Light, Insti-Prints and Ed Majarus engines from Bellchester, Minnesota. Tonight a used Late Model engine was under the hood of the Modified. The team normally runs a Late Model and a Modified at Deer Creek Speedway in Racine, Minnesota

The 25-lap event started with Jason Hughes and Brady Short in the front row ahead of Mark Dotson and Todd Bennett. The third row showed the cars of Bill Howard and Shane Cottle. It was last night’s winner Hughes that dominated the first half of the race despite six yellow flags for minor spins in the turns. Two of those who spun in separate incidents were Bob Pohlman and Cottle on lap four. Both drivers would put on a charge through the field that landed them top five finishes at the end.

With nine laps in the books and Hughes leading, Steve Arpin had steadily moved from seventh starting spot to second using the highest groove. Unbelievably, Waits was up to third by then just ahead of Kent Arment, Howard, Dotson and Chad Kinder.

Waits used an inside move down the back stretch to slip by Arpin for second spot on lap 12, then repeatedly challenged Hughes on the inside in the turns until it finally paid off for him in turn four and he led at the flag stand on lap 18. The final yellow with three laps to go saw Cottle nailing down second as he passed Howard on the white flag lap and the finish showed Kinder crossing fourth and Pohlman recovering from his early spin to rank fifth. Rounding out the top ten it was Arpin, Hughes, Arment, Dotson and David Hess.

The 104 car field had Kinder with fast time of the night at 17.579 and two C-Mains sent Corey Partin, David Cain, Rick Hensley and David McWilliams into the two B-Mains. Jeff Matthews and Roger Crouse went to the A-Main from the first B-Main while Waits came up from 13th to win the second B-Main ahead of Blake Jegtvig. Heats were won by Howard, Arment, William Hampton, Todd Bennett, Chad Ohnstad, Hughes, Dotson, Hess, Cottle, Short and Steve Arpin. The Gulf Coast Produce Strawberry Dash was won by Paul Wilmoth, Jr.

Thanks, Jean Lynch for East Bay Raceway Park
