After Mother Nature decided to cancel Mon. night's race at Brownstown, IL, the rain moved away but the thunder rolled into Highland, IL in the form of Summernationals.
Qualifying saw the #2 car of Brady Smith take fast time with a time of 13.516. The top six times automatically advanced to the dash. Joining Smith (in order) were the cars of #B12 Kevin Weaver, #28 Jimmy Mars, #18 Shannon Babb, #27 Rodney Melvin and the #55 of Jeep VanWormer. With Summernational rules, the current summernats. points leader, current UMP points leader and current track points leader ( all not already in top 6) would round out the field. These spots were filled by #28 Dennis Erb, jr., #51 Mark Faust and #25 Frankie Martin respectively.
The Dash had an auspicious beginning as Smith jumped early and Melvin's nose ended up underneath the rear of Smith. The Yellow came out and on the backstretch, Mr.Melvin pulled along side of Mr. Sm ith to have a brief discussion on proper starting procedure. The next attempt saw Melvin jump the gun and cars collected behind Smith with no major damage. The third time was the charm and on lap 2 Smith drifted high, Melvin ducked underneath and it was follow the leader to the finish.

In the feature, #2 Brady Smith jumped out quickly and for a few laps it looked like it might be a walk in the park. Rodney Melvin (#27) then slowly began to reel Smith back in as the battle raged for third between #28 Jimmy Mars and the "Mowequa Missile" #18 Shannon Babb. Mars took the low line and Babb found some horses to pull him around the high side and Mars as well. As fast as Melvin was now reeling in Smith, Babb was now reeling in both. Melvin went low on Smith and looked as if he might get around him until Smith found a little something extra and pulled ahead. That set the table for Babb as he shot around Melvin on the high side of 3 and 4 then dove low and eased past Smith in 1 and 2 to take a lead he would never relinquish. Melvin, Mars and Erb slid around Smith and those three battled hard for second the rest of the race. Mars continually poked his nose under Melvin but never could quite get the grip needed to shoot past. Erb, pr! obably the fastest car of the three, had the same problem trying to get around Mars as they followed each other the rest of the way. Shannon Babb has now won 7 of the first 11 Summernational events as they head into the next race at North Vernon, IN for another 40 lap $6,000 to win feature.
