Reakes Receives Early Present With Top Time In SDW Sportsman Qualifying

Top DIRTcar Sportsman teams made their return appearance at Super DIRT Week on Friday afternoon and it was a most memorable occasion for Sammy Reakes IV. The Fulton, N.Y. speedster celebrated his 20^th birthday by setting fast time to win the pole position start for Saturday’s headline Town Mechanical 30 Championship at the New York State Fairgrounds.

Reakes posted a one-lap time of 32.467 sec. for an average speed of 110.882 mph around the Syracuse Mile after John McClelland pulled out just 10 cars earlier and was clocked at 32.182 sec. for the second best time. For his fast time among 57 entries, Reakes earned $500 from P & M Fabrication while McClelland claimed the $250 Motorsports Safety Systems Outside-Pole Award.

“My great uncle Sam (DIRT Hall of Famer) used to finish second here a lot, hopefully I can do one better on Saturday,” said Central New York runner Reakes, steering his familiar no. 17K Whittaker Trophy Auto Sales/Bicknell mount  on Friday. “I saw on the first lap turns one and two were kind of tricky with a lot of loose stuff while there was a lot of rubber laid down in turns three and four. I knew I could do a little better the second time around so I just buried the throttle and everything worked out just fine.”

Drivers not qualifying through time trials will contend for six more spots in a pair of consolation round races on Saturday morning at 11:45am to complete the 30-car starting grid.
