Generation Gap Tightened After Advance Auto Parts Modified Triple 20s

Syracuse, NY – October 5, 2007 – By Tom Skibinski, DIRTcar Racing NorthEast PR Director

The Advance Auto Parts DIRTcar Big-Block Modified Triple 20 qualifying heats held at the New York State Fairgrounds on Friday lasted nearly two hours and when the final checkered flag flew the results spanned two-generations of success at the historic Syracuse Mile.

Veteran Pat Ward captured the opening 20-mile marathon and rising star Ronnie Johnson claimed the third leg while Ward’s Gypsum Express teammate Billy Decker took top honors in between. Ward and Johnson pocketed $4,000 for their first-ever Triple 20 triumphs with Decker reaching victory lane for the ninth time in the afternoon qualifying round.

“This was a weird race with Jimmy (Phelps) put back and the 26 car (Ryan Godown) being pretty aggressive,” said Ward, 50, just one day after securing a fourth-place start for Sunday’s Rite Aid 200 Championship after setting fourth fast time in Thursday trials. “We beat (Godown) into turn one on the restart and it was ours all the way after that. Now we can go for the big money on Sunday.”

Following Ward across the stripe were Canandaigua Speedway points champion Steve Paine, yesterday’s fast time trailer Phelps, New Jersey invader Godown and 2002 Rite Aid 200 winner Vic Coffey.

While Ward won comfortably on the sun-baked fairgrounds oval, he got an early race break when track officials sent pole-sitter Phelps from first to third for jumping the second restart. The 20-mile affair opened with Matt Sheppard getting sideways in turn two after checking up behind Eddie Marshall. A half-dozen cars proceeded to pile in with Sheppard done for the remainder of the day. A pair of #3 cars driven by Justin Haers and Chad Brachmann hooked up in turn one on the ensuing restart to bring out another yellow flag and without a single lap scored, Phelps was penalized two positions and Ward inherited the top spot never to give it up.

After Ward endured nearly 30 minutes to win the first heat, Decker was more methodical leading every lap in a race that took a third of the time. “That first race had a little too much action for me, I liked it a lot better taking it easy in the second one,” said Decker, 42, a four-time Rite Aid 200 champion as well as pole-sitter three of the past five year. “Everybody used their heads out there and ran a smart, safe race.

Lebanon Valley Speedway points champion J.R. Heffner, Frenchman David Hebert, sprinter Jason Barney and Pennsylvanian Rick Laubach rounded out the front-five as Decker stretched out his lead to a dozen car-lengths under the checkers.

Johnson staved off constant pressure from 1992 Rite Aid 200 winner Richie Tobias Jr. to come away with a solid victory in the third and final Advance Auto Parts qualifier. “I’ve been coming here ever since I was a little kid so standing here with a checkered flag right now is a real honor,” said Johnson, 33, son of two-time Rite Aid winner Jack Johnson. “I have to thank Tim (Fuller), he gave me a real clean lane to run at the start and that’s always important at a place like Syracuse.”

Tobias moved past Fuller for second just prior to the halfway mark and remained there for the distance despite moving up to the high line to threaten Johnson’s stronghold over the final circuits. Gary Tomkins and ’88 Rite Aid winner Kenny Brightbill filed into top-five positions in the closest heat race of the day.

Time trials (6), Lebanon Valley 200 winner (1), qualifying races (30), BRP Tour winner and four provisional starter from the Advance Auto Parts Super DIRTcar Series bring the total to 42 cars before the 'Dig Safely New York Shootout' last-chance consolation round on Sunday morning and Saturday night shootout at Cayuga County Fair Speedway complete the 45-car starting grid for Sunday's headline Rite Aid 200 finale scheduled for 2:15 p.m.

Thompson Motorsports Pit Stop Competition

Thompson Motorsports spearheaded the return of the popular Big-Block Modified Pit Crew Competition on Friday afternoon and it was the crew of Billy Decker earning the $1,000 top prize for 16 and a half seconds of work on the front stretch cinder track. Decker’s team turned in a time of 16.30 seconds to best past Pit Crew team challenge winner Brett Hearn while third-place finisher Steve Hulsizer finished in the final payoff position among the nine participating Big-Block Modified teams .
