LaVern started racing in 1989 in the IMCA Stock Car Class at Independence Motor Speedway.  His first win was in 1996 in the IMCA Stock Car Class at Echo Valley Speedway.  Career highlights include 1997 Track Champion at Fayette County Raceway in Stock Car and 1997 Track Champion at Cresco Speedway in Stock Car.
